Department Chair Duties

Note: Most of the department chair duties on the following list are taken from the Faculty Handbook. The appropriate sections are cited.

The function of the chair of a department is to coordinate the work of that department. The chair is expected to consult with other members of the department on all important matters of policy or procedure involving the interests of the department. (II.D.)

Personnel:

Provide new faculty with information about office space, equipment, office supplies, and the ordering of books for Lipscomb Library. Also make recommendations to faculty as to the scheduling of office hours, procedures for notification in the event of absence from scheduled classes, etc. (II.D.)

Aid junior colleagues in their development as teachers and to make their own experience and counsel available to junior colleagues. (III.D.)

Review end of course evaluations with untenured members of the department. (III.E.4) Confer annually with each person on probationary status about his/her progress toward tenure, to identify strengths and weaknesses, and to make appropriate suggestions for improving his/her performance. (III.H.)

Chair Department Evaluation Committees for the reappointment and tenure reviews of members of the department. (III.I.2.)

Supervise adjunct faculty teaching in the department.

Departmental Staffing:

Provide a written rationale to the Dean of the College outlining reasons for the continuation of a position as defined or redefined in the context of the department’s purpose and current staffing when a vacancy occurs in the department. (III.F.1.)

Coordinate matters pertaining to the recruitment of personnel. (II.D.) Follow faculty search procedures as defined in the Faculty Handbook or in Faculty Searches memo. Chair the department search committee. Keep records of all appointments, whether full or part-time, including all candidate materials and notes, for a minimum of two years, in accordance with Equal Opportunity Commission requirements. (III.F.)

Plan staffing for the department and submit department adjunct staffing request to the Dean. (III.F.2.)

Administrative duties:

Formulate the department budget and track department expenses throughout the budget year. (II.D.)

Request support for departmental academic needs and facilities improvements to the Dean of the College.

In consultation with the department, propose courses and catalog changes to the Curriculum Committee. (II.D.)

Provide the Registrar with a suggested schedule of classes. (II.D.)

Work with the Associate Dean on Orientation and the placement of new students.

Submit department assessment report and department annual report.

Coordinate the advising of majors in the department. The responsibility for advising departmental majors shall be shared by all faculty members in a department. (III.D.2.)

Maintain department records (assessment reports, annual reports, etc.) so that department review process can be followed. Guide the department in department review process.

Provide and oversee information on department (admissions brochures, web site, etc.).

Meet periodically with the Dean of the College.
