Annual R-MWC On-Campus Teaching Workshop
2007: May 9th (afternoon session) and May 10th (morning session)
Open to all R-MWC faculty
Workshop leader: Dr. Michael Kimmel; SUNY at Stony Brook
Michael Kimmel is among the world’s leading experts on men and
masculinity. Professor of Sociology at State University of New York
at Stony Brook, he is the author or editor of more than 20 books on
the topic, including: Men’s Lives (6th edition,
2003) The Politics of Manhood (1996), Manhood in America:
A Cultural History (1996), The Gendered Society (2000),
The Gender of Desire (2005), and The History of Men
(2005). He edits Men and Masculinities, an interdisciplinary
scholarly journal, and edited the Encyclopedia of Men and
Masculinities (2004) and the Handbook of Studies on Men and
Masculinities (2004).
He consults with corporations, NGOs and public sector organizations
all over the world on gender equity issues, including work-family
balance, reducing workplace discrimination, and promoting
diversity. Kimmel has found ways to bring men into the discussions
about gender equality in a way that is engaging and humorous, and
enables everyone to feel included in gender equity projects.
He has consulted with all the Ministries for Gender Equality in the
Nordic countries, and has delivered the International Women’s Day
lecture at the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the
European Commission, and the European Space Agency. He has worked
with more than a dozen Fortune 500 companies as well as smaller
firms.
One of the first males at Vassar
College, he has studied the impact of coeducation in formelrly
single-sex colleges, and consulted with the Board of Trustees and
faculties of other colleges contemplating or undergoing that
transition. He was the U.S. Department of Justice's expert witness
in the litigation involving coeducation at the Citadel and VMI.
Integrating Men into the
Curriculum
Wed. May 9th, 12:00-5:00
What do we know about young men? Where are they at? Both
didactic and interactive, this workshop will prepare faculty for the
experience of the entry of men on campus. We'll cover the "great male
shortage" or "boy crisis", the definition of masculinity to young men, peer
dynamics, male-female interactions, differences among men, and the paradoxes
of growing up (why we say "they're growing up so fast" and then they seem to
simply refuse to grow up past age 18 until they hit about 30!).
Thurs. May 10th, 9:00-12:00
"Integrating men into the curriculum" -- this workshop will
be problem focused and interactive and will focus on how we bring men into
the classroom and the curriculum, and retain the commitments to gender
equality and women's equality. I'll share some research and ideas, and it
will be a chance to discuss with colleagues strategies and issues.
e-mail bschwartz to enroll for these sessions.

Thursday, May 4th, 2006
Leggett, 523
9 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Open to all R-MWC faculty
Workshop leader: Dr. William Buskist; Auburn University.
William Buskist began his academic career in the early 1980s as a
laboratory researcher investigating human competition and cooperation. About a
decade later, his experiences teaching an introductory psychology course led him
to wonder about how he might become a more effective teacher. That question led
him to the research literature on teaching effectiveness, and ultimately to a
drastic shift in both his teaching and research efforts—for the past 12 years,
he has been studying and teaching about the qualities and behaviors
characteristic of “master teachers.” Recently, he has become interested in the
assessment of teaching effectiveness and his working with a graduate student,
Jared Keeley, in developing a new teaching assessment inventory.
Acquiring the Habits and Practices of Master Teachers
This workshop will focus on understanding skills that are
reflective of master teaching. Its goals are to (a) explore the various
dimensions of master teaching, (b) consider student-faculty viewpoints on the
habits and practices of master teachers, (c) help participants examine their
teaching competencies and develop personal goals and assessment plans for
improving their teaching.
Details of the workshop schedule to follow...

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!
This year’s organizing theme of
“The Creative Campus” for the Improving
University Teaching Conference will provide an opportunity to bring
together creative thinking about higher education in all its rich
dimensions. IUT historically has advocated a change in the pedagogical
paradigm from “teacher- centered” to “learning-centered.” Our emphasis
on creativity this year broadens our focus to help capture the
excitement of original thinking in higher education. We welcome
submissions that address any aspect of innovation that positively
influences learning, teaching, and university life.
Suggested Topics:
Among the questions we hope to address through plenary sessions,
workshops, papers, and posters will be the following:
- How does a university promote a vibrant intellectual atmosphere,
particularly given the increasing demands for accountability?
- What does creative research in the scholarship of teaching and
learning tell us about best practices?
- What creative learner- centered classroom strategies promote
more effective learning?
- How can technology enhance the creative learning opportunities?
- What teaching and learning opportunities exist beyond regular
classroom boundaries?
- Can we design a curricula that enhance personal and professional
creativity?
- How can we meet the challenge of developing a competent
workforce through the most creative means possible?
- Is there room for creativity in administrative life?
The Improving University Teaching Conference is a
self-supporting, non- profit organization under U.S. law. We would
like to express our deep appreciation to
The University of Jaén for their support in hosting IUT 2007 in
Jaén, Spain and The
University of West Florida. For additional information or

2007 Lilly Conference Welcome
We are pleased to welcome you to the 27th Annual Lilly Conference on
College Teaching.
This weekend event has become a "teaching retreat" as well as a
conference. The Marcum Conference Center is on a beautiful, wooded site
at the edge of the Miami University campus, one of America's premier
college settings. The University, with its timeless Georgian
architecture, and Oxford, with its brick streets and small shops, make
an attractive location for learning.
In past years, many deans and chief academic officers have supported
the attendance of a team of their faculty at this conference, as reward
and recognition for an outstanding teacher, as encouragement for a
junior faculty member, or as an opportunity for the team to bring new
teaching and learning ideas back to campus. Institutions planning
Teaching and Learning Centers have found the Lilly Conference an
excellent place to meet and "scout" some outstanding teacher-scholars.
Full and half day pre-conference workshops will be held on
Thursday, November 22nd, and the opening plenary will be given on
Thursday evening. A variety of seminars and workshops are scheduled all
day on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday morning. The conference ends
with lunch following the closing plenary on Sunday.
Contributed paper presenters are invited to submit manuscripts about
their teaching innovations for review for publication in the
international Journal on
Excellence in College Teaching. The Journal
answers Ernest Boyer's call, given in his 1990 Lilly Conference keynote,
for opportunities to publish the scholarship of teaching
