       Auditions

   Readthrough     Summer 2002

Director Tom Stephens has announced auditions for The Quarterly, a play in two acts by R-MWC alumna Valerie von Rosenvinge, and the first production of the 2002-2003 season.  The script is now on reserve in the Lipscomb Library.  All who plan to audition should please read the script prior to auditions and arrive promptly at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday and Monday, September 15 & 16.  Prepared monologues are not required for these auditions.

Roles are available for eight women; four characters from the 1990's and four from the 1890's.

Von Rosenvinge describes the plot:  Four contemporary women get together to read a new play, that one of them has written, based on a journal of meetings recorded a century earlier by the writer's great-great grandmother.  The experience inspires them to examine the role that women play in the lives of each other and how, despite the passage of time and changes within society, female friendships remain the ultimate support system for most women.

The Theatre Department hosted Ms. von Rosenvinge to the campus in July for a live reading of her play.  Several women from the community were invited to read each of the characters and the stage directions while seated on stools in front of a small but appreciative audience.   A lively exchange followed leaving all anticipating the full production in the Fall.

Hearing the women read gave life to the two worlds of the play and provided much insight into the characters.  Director and Playwright were able to meet extensively over the weekend and Ms. von Rosenvinge  has since returned home to complete a first re-write.  She was quite excited with the prospect of refining the play throughout the rehearsal period as the cast brings it to life.  She will return to campus for opening night.

Student News

Kearston Dillard '03 managed to design lighting for three shows this summer while serving as Stage II Electrician with the Barter Theatre in Abingdon (the state theatre of Virginia).  Her lighting is illustrated above for Sword in the Stone (2 pics), Little Red, and Lion, Witch, and the Wardrobe (2 pics).

Kyle Stillwell '03 was the Assistant Director for the up and coming Shakespeare in the Hills theatre company in Citrus County, Florida.  She got a bit of excitement when she was handed a role in The Merry Wives of Windsor two weeks before opening when one of her actors became otherwise engaged.

Andee Bowden '04 has been overseeing the building of scenery for The Libation Bearers (R-MWC Greek Play for the Fall of '02) which she and others started at the end of last semester.  She returned to campus in August to finish it up.

Michelle Andrews '04 was all things theatre this summer at Camp Wazi in Maine.  She taught Creative Dramatics, Improv and Acting, and worked on Costumes and Make-up for their shows.

Others have no doubt been involved with Theatre over this past summer and not yet informed the management of this newsletter of all the details.  Are you one of them?  Send your News by clicking here!

Faculty News

Mary Coy writes: This summer I had the most enriching experience of working with one of Moscow Arts Theater's leading directors and acting teachers, Slava Dolgatchev. Along with 13 other acting teachers from around the country we spent two weeks studying the Stanislavski technique as it relates to play analysis and acting. I also worked with several other master teachers including Robert Cohen(acting), Peter Francis James(Shakespeare) and Pers Brahe (mask).   I look forward to using what I learned in my own teaching this semester so get ready for yet another "whole new approach."!

Dr. Stephens returned from his Faculty study trip in sunny Guyana to orchestrate Valerie von Rosenvinge's visit to campus and the public reading of The Quarterly.  Ken Parks was able to meet wth both Director and Playwright to get an early start on the scenic design for the fall production.  Watch this space next week for a picture of the thumbnail sketch and, if you're lucky, a picture of the model.

The rest of the design team was unable to meet Ms. Rosenvinge because of other committments.  Lighting Designer, Kearston Dillard '03, was at work with the Barter Theatre (see Student News above) and Costume Designer, Dorothy Smith, was out of the country accompanying her Opera design to Italy.

Michael Heather has been busy this summer hanging standard Reportory Lighting Plots (Rep Plots) in both the Thoresen Theatre and the Lab Theatre on the 2nd floor.  You might also congratulate him on his recent wedding.

Auditions

All students interested in auditioning for summer acting jobs at the SETC convention in Alexandria, VA Mar 6-9 must first pass the Virginia Theater Association auditions to be held in Richmond on November 1.  In order to reserve a place in the VTA audition you must be recommended by the Theatre Department.

Therefore, we will be holding screening Auditions for the VTA Auditions at the end of next month.   Anyone interested in this series of auditions MUST see Mary Coy as soon as possible to discuss the procedure and your audition pieces.  Please contact Mary and email your intention to audition by 5pm. on Sept. 16.  Audition pieces will be presented to department faculty on Sept. 26 to receive a recommendation to the VTA auditions.  Your mail in application must be sent to VTA by Sept. 27 to secure your audition time.  *Note: you cannot audition for VTA or SETC without first auditioning for the department so get your name in soon.

The Department would like to sponsor as many students as possible for these auditions so start working on your audition pieces now.

Students who would like to enter the juried Design exhibition at SETC must also be recommended by the Department.  Be sure to let the faculty know as soon as possible that you are interested.

If you are thinking of attending the SETC convention for all the many things that go on there; interviewing for Technical and Design work or participating in the many seminars and workshops, it would be good to let the Theatre Faculty know that as well.
