VIRTUAL THEATRE PROJECT:

Developing interactive digital models of historic theatre spaces and stage machinery

General theatres

Theatres visited

VA theatres & groups

This project is intended to map the structure of historic theatres, their spaces and machinery in a three dimensional digital program that will facilitate interactive learning and exploration of the theatre world.  Users should be able to virtually walk through the models, seeing the colors and details of the theatres and their spaces.  In other words, users should have a visual sense of being in the actual theatre.  In addition, persons should be able to use the finished program to create different sets in a variety of different spaces, walk through these sets, and view them from anywhere in the audience.

The theatres that will be focused on during this summer are mainly in the Virginia, Maryland and Washington D.C. areas.  A few from other surrounding states will be included but to a much lesser extent.  Though this project focuses on theatres with a historic quality, all types of theatres are included in our list of links.

Stepping through the project

  • Compile a list of theatres and theatre groups in Virginia (including contact information)

  • Compile a list of theatres in other states particularly focusing on Maryland and Washington D.C.

  • Create a web resource that provides links to these theatres and a calendar of the seasons of a selected few

  • Contact specific theatres in order to obtain documents and drawings of the structures, and permission to view, photograph and measure the buildings

  • Visit specific theatres - obtain documents, drawings, photographs and measurements of structures

  • Transfer data to software and develop the program using photographs, measurements and notes

  • Create journal / album of photographs of all theatres visited
