His first lap was 49.6 seconds, and the second lap was 52.13 seconds!
This record stood for more than 16 years until broken by Wilson Kipketer's 1:41.24 on August 13, 1997.
On Sunday, August 24,1997 Kipketer lowered the record even more to 1:41.11!
That's an average of 50.55 seconds per 400 meter lap!
