An all-sky map of the anisotropy in the cosmic background radiation observed by the Microwave Anisotropy Probe in 2003:
The cosmic background radiation has been traveling towards us since the universe was 380,000 years old! The blue colors in the map are regions which are cooler and more dense than the regions shown in red. Below is a comparison between the lower resolution all-sky map made by the Cosmic Background Explorer in 1996 and the 35-times higher resolution observed by the Microwave Anisotropy Probe in 2003:
