Ten APA style references | ||
For
this assignment you must present a minimum of 10 references that relate to
your research topic. The assignment does not assume that you have made an
irrevocable commitment to that topic. Your references must be presented in
APA style and should reflect the quality of references that you would want
to include in the reference section of your proposal. APA
style is described in the APA Publication Manual 5th Edition.
You will find pages 215-281of the APA manual most
helpful for successful completion of this assignment. Pages 232-239 serve as an index to the appropriate style for the different
kinds of publications that you might wish to include. I recognize that the
demands of the manual are very “picky,” that is one of the reasons
that we are asking you to do this for the first time early in your careers
as Psychologists. Please
note that the APA manual requires that references be presented in a hanging indent
format with titles of books and journals presented in italics (see my
example below).
Remember that Microsoft Word has a hanging indent format option in the
paragraph formatting menus (Format - Paragraph - Special - Hanging). Make
sure that your references reflect the requirements for your annotated
bibliography. When I grade this assignment I will count to make sure that
there are at least 10 references, but I will also look at the sources (and
evaluate your compliance with the demands of APA style). Nonprofessional
sources like Psychology Today, textbooks, and newspapers will not
count toward the total. References from these sources can be included as
additional sources if you like. I
encourage you to start collecting the sources that you list for this
assignment as soon as you can. As you know, there is a necessary delay in
interlibrary loans. More importantly you will need time to read and digest
theses sources. For many of you, your reading will also lead you in
directions that you are not anticipating at this moment. These new
directions will no doubt require that you go back to the library. None of
these things is effectively accomplished at the eleventh hour. Some tips: Remember that you can capture most of the material that you need for your references from the results of your on-line searching. Make sure that you have References centered at the top of your page. Use your name as a running head in the upper left hand corner. Remember that every line should be double spaced, don't use any extra spaces between anything and don't single space the text of your references. (Notice that HTML has forced extra space between references in my example below.) You might find Russ Dewey's links to APA style resources on the Internet useful as you complete this assignment.
