The National Model United Nations Conference (NMUN)
is the world’s largest university-level simulation of the United Nations and
takes place in New York City every spring semester. Annually, the conference
educates more than 3,400 students (with 50% coming from outside the United
States) about the United Nations and other contemporary global issues.
Randolph College students have been attending NMUN for eight years. Every
year, we receive a new country to represent, and our country assignments
have ranged from Greece to Afghanistan to Somalia; one year we even
represented a non-governmental organization. Every spring, Dr. Jennifer
Abbassi, Chair of the Global Studies Department, offers a class entitled
Issues before the United Nations for interested students, which teaches
about the workings of the UN, the assigned country, and the respective
committees the country sits on in real life at the UN. Students in the
class form the MUN delegation, and travel to New York in April for the NMUN
Conference.
