Introductory Creative Writing is designed to give you an overview of fiction, drama and poetry basics and the kind of fundamental work with language that all “creative” writing requires. The course includes readings from the textbooks as a background for class discussions of technique, style and craft, which will lay the foundation for later workshop discussions of your classmates’ writings. By developing your eye and ear, and by amassing a critical vocabulary, you will be able to approach your own and other writing with greater insight and rigor. Even more importantly, the kind of close attention to language and detail that both fiction and poetry demand will sharpen your observation skills, and increase your capacity to pay attention to the world at large (the cost of admission to thoughtful and textured living and writing).
