ATMOSPHERE & METEORS

Aurora1 This dramatic picture of an aurora was taken on October 31, 1991 in Alaska.
Aurora2 Here is a picture of the Aurora Australis taken from the Space Shuttle in April, 1991.
Aurora3 A movie of far ultraviolet auroral emissions from molecular nitrogen excited by electrons during the geomagnetic storm of July 15, 2000. The movie is made from images taken by the IMAGE satellite.
Aurora4 A movie of far ultraviolet auroral emissions from molecular nitrogen excited by electrons during the geomagnetic storm of June 8, 2000. The movie is made from images taken by the IMAGE satellite.
Aurora5 The Aurora Australis seen from the space shuttle in October of 1994. Also an aurora viewed from the International Space Station.
Aurora6 Two pictures of auroras seen from the Canadian Yukon.
Aurora7 Picture illustrating the relative heights of clouds and the aurora.
Aurora8 Aurora seen above volcanic gases emitted by the volcano Hekla in Iceland in 1991.
Aurora9 Fantastic movies of auroras filmed in Alaska. Each frame is a 4 second exposure, and there are 4 or 5 seconds between exposures.
Aurora10 An aurora visible over the eastern U.S. at night on November 7, 2004.
Sunpillar Sunlight reflecting off flat ice crystals at sunset.
Rainbow Beautiful picture of a rainbow!
Moonbow A rainbow lit by the Moon!
MoonRing A ring around the Moon on a cold hazy night.
Sunrays Anticrepuscular rays!
Equinox Sun Sunrise above the E-W oriented Western Canal in Tempe, Arizona.
Analemma1 On one and the same piece of film take images of the Sun at the same time of day for an entire year. The result is an image like this one completed by Frank Zullo in 1991. The figure-eight pattern is called an analemma.
Analemma2 This analemma photograph was made by Dennis di Cicco from 1978 to 1979. The three diagonal sun trails show the Sun's motion from sunrise until 5 minutes before the analemma images were taken. The highest sun trail was imaged at the summer solstice, and the lowest sun trail was imaged at the winter solstice.
Sunsets and Sun Trails A series of time-lapse photos of sunsets showing the Sun's path relative to the horizon as Earth rotates.
Moonrise/Sunset Great picture of the full Moon rising within the shadow of Hawaii's Mauna Kea volcano! The shadow is cast by the setting Sun.
Leonids Some Leonid meteors!
Perseids Some Perseid meteors!
Fireball This spectacular fireball appeared in 1972 in daylight over the Teton Range in western Wyoming. It was traveling at 15 km/sec and skipped out of Earth's atmosphere like a stone skipping on water.
Fireball2 A stone about 2 meters in length disintegrates explosively in Earth's atmosphere over South Wales, UK in late September, 2003.
Meteorite1 The 2,758 kg Old Woman  meteorite fell hundreds of years ago in the Old Woman mountains of California. It is composed of iron and nickel and was discovered by gold prospectors in 1976.
Meteorite2 A Bedouin guide sits next to the 4,500 pound Wabar meteorite in the "empty quarter" of Saudi Arabia.
Fireball Film A film of the meteor that ultimately fell into the back of a car in Peekskill, NY on October 9, 1992.
Meteorite3 The famous Peekskill meteorite.
Meteorite4 On March 26, 2003 in Park Forest, Illinois a meteorite crashed through a roof, struck a printer, bounced off a wall, and landed near a filing cabinet! The meteorite is about 10 cm in diameter. The image shows the ceiling hole, and, in the lower right corner, the meteorite itself lying below the dented wall.
Impacts! Artists' portrayals of giant impacts on Earth!
