Introduction To Studio Art - ART 103

An introduction to the principles and visual vocabulary of studio art with emphasis on drawing and color using a variety of materials and techniques. Hours credit: 3. Required of all art majors.

Intro To Photography - ART 181

An aesthetic and technical examination of the medium of black and white photography and its history. The basics of exposure, developing and darkroom printing as well as alternative techniques will be taught. Identical with Communication 181. Hours credit: 3.

Watercolor Painting - ART 201

An introduction to the materials and techniques of watercolor. Hours credit: 3.

Fresco & Mosaic - ART 204

This course offers the opportunity to combine studio practice with art history in one class. Students will learn the techniques of fresco and mosaic during class meetings and weekend workshops. The class will also explore the history of the two media in Italy as it was practiced in Antiquity, through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and up to the contemporary era. In this aspect of the course, students will learn the historic, cultural, literary, and/or religious meaning of the works they will see for themselves. The art studied will be visited during the optional study tour to Italy. Hours credit: 3. Alternate years.

Fresco/Mosaic Study Tour - ART 204S

This two-week study tour seminar will take place in Rome and Florence in May-June 2008. In Rome, the group will see mosaics and frescoes including ancient (St. Peter's, the Domus Aurea, and the neighboring port city of Ostia), medieval (Sta. Prasede, Sta. Maria Maggiore, San Clemente), Renaissance (Villa Farnesina, Vatican) and contemporary works. In Florence, the group will have the opportunity to contemplate the original function of late Medieval and Renaissance frescoes in situ at Sta. Maria del Carmine, Sta. Croce, the Monastery of San Marco, and Sta. Trinità. From Florence a day trip to Siena will be taken to observe frescoes in a largely intact late medieval setting. The group will also see works in major museum collections. All work will be submitted by the end of the fourth week of the fall semester following the tour. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 204. Intermediate Drawing I - ART 231

This course will focus on developing observational skills and hand/eye coordiantion. Drawing from the human fiqure will be emphasized. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 103R or permission of the instructor.

Intermediate Drawing II - ART 232

This course will focus on the developing observational skills and hand/eye co-ordination. Drawing from the human fiqure will be emphasized. Art 232 is a continuation of Art 231 with increasing emphasis on the development of individual expression. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 103R or permission of the instructor.

Oil Painting - ART 233

An introduction to the process of painting in oils. Both traditional and contemporary approaches will be used. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 103R or permission of the instructor.

Oil Painting - ART 234

An introduction to the process of painting in oils. Both traditional and contemporary approaches will be used. Art 234 is a continuation of Art 233 with emphasis on the development of individual expression. Hours credit: 3. Prequisite: ART 103R or permission of the instructor.

Printmaking-Monotype - ART 235

This course will focus on the history and technique of monotypes. Often called the "painterly print" monotypes have drawn artists to explore the spontaneous and expressive depths of this colorful print technique. Contemporary modes will be explored. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: Art 103R or permission of the instructor.

Printmaking - Woodcut - ART 248

An exploration of printmaking through the technique of woodcut. Course will include traditional and contemporary methods. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 103R or permission of the instructor.

Film-Making Into Photography - ART 274

This course will make use of the cross-pollination between photography and film-making. Students will view selected films that incorporate issues in photography and will incorporate films as a subject in their own photography. Traditional and digital darkrooms will be used. Students will also collaborate in making a film. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART/COMM 181 or permission of the instructor. One time only.

Digital Film Making - ART 279

This course introduces students to the basics of using digital technology for short film production: scriptwriting, story boarding, non-linear digital editing, and sound mixing. Students will produce independent films and collaborate on the production of a class film. Identical with Art 279. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART/COMM 181 or 277 or permission of the instructor.

Topics In Photography - ART 284

An exploration of contemporary photography. Coursework will include camera and darkroom techniques necessary to the field of inquiry. Identical with Communication 284. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisites: ART 103R and ART/COMM 181; or permission of instructor.

Special Topics In Studio Art - ART 312

Topics in studio art will vary from year to year. Possible topics include mosaic and fresco painting. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 103 or permission of the instructor. May be repeated for credit when topic differs.

All studio majors are required to explore some aspect of creative visual expression while working on a year-long theme. The art education student will begin this project during the period of student teaching. Hours credit: 1. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. Required of all studio art majors with an emphasis in studio art enrolled in the Teacher Licensure Program.

Seniors are expected to develop their individual artistic sensibility that will allow them to explore, in-depth, some aspect of creative visual expression. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. Required of all art majors with an emphasis in studio are not enrolled in the Teacher Licensure Program.

Senior Studio II - ART 426

Continuation of the senior program described in Art 421 or 425. At the end of the year students will present an exhibition of their work at the Maier Museum of Art. Hours credit: 3. Prerequisite: ART 421 or 425. Required of all art majors with an emphasis in studio art, including those enrolled in the Teacher Licensure Program.
