Meet the People of the American Culture Program

Dan Stiffler
(e-mail)
Professor of English, Director of the American Culture Program
Dan Stiffler, director of the Program, took his Ph.D. at the University of Oregon and teaches American Literature and Culture. He has won the college's Gillie A. Larew Distinguished Teaching Award, as well as recognition by the United Method Church for exemplary teaching. His scholarly interests range from early American captivity narratives to post-modern works on travel, from the transcendental movement to contemporary celebrity culture. Among many remarkable experiences in the Program, sitting next to Walt Whitman's bed, while reading aloud "The Dalliance of Eagles," and standing atop Spirit Mound in South Dakota, while retracing the route of Lewis and Clark, stand out as most memorable. The Program's greatest value is its dynamic process: students and teachers—all of us learn from the American voices we meet.

Julio Rodriguez (e-mail)
Assistant Professor of American Culture
Dr. Rodriguez has published essays on the intersection of masculinity and sport, documentary film and race. His  most recent articles include a piece on the documentary When We Were Kings titled Sports Matters: Race, Recreation and Culture, and an article on the homerun race between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire.

His favorite aspect of teaching  in the American Culture Program: “You never stop learning! I get to learn from my colleagues and from students. No other academic experience comes close to providing the integrative learning environment that is created in this program. And I really enjoy interacting with the students. They're active, invested, driven, and free to be themselves. They can be wonderfully wacky and incredibly insightful in a span of minutes."

Ellen Hostetter
Ainsworth Visiting Scholar in American Culture
Professor Hostetter has published essays about landscape and emotions.  She received the Dissertation Enhancement Award at the University of Kentucky.

Her favorite part of the program is “field trips where we drive through, walk in, and interact with tangible and everyday expressions of American culture.”

Elizabeth-Ann Rowlison
(e-mail)
American Culture Program Coordinator
Elizabeth-Ann graduated from RMWC in 2000 with a BA in American Studies. She participated in the American Culture Program as a student, and was the program's first intern. When she graduated, Elizabeth-Ann returned to her hometown of Denver, CO, to put her AmCP experience to work. After two years as the Publicist at the Denver PBS station, she went to work for the New Voters Project, the largest grassroots youth vote campaign in the history of this country. Most recently, she worked with Environment Colorado, lobbying on clean air issues in the Colorado State Legislature. Elizabeth-Ann returned to the College in the summer of 2005 to work with the American Culture Program.
