Humankind has always used visual expression in its search to understand better its place in an increasingly complex world; the visual arts are a major source of our understanding of that place and our past. The Department's art history offerings trace this search from prehistory to the present while studio courses give the student the skills and understanding with which to continue that search for understanding.
Courses in the Department provide a framework for the study of art through knowledge of its principles and history and through studio work. The Department's courses are not limited to those who plan advanced study in the field of art or art history, but are open to any student wishing to develop critical and creative abilities.
