Randolph-Macon Woman’s College Environmental Audit - Q & A

General Information about the Campus

High Priority

EnergyStatus:  Look at records provided by Angela Hefner.

Water Status:  See the water filtration plant, check out the Pedlar River Reservoir, and check irrigation meters on campus, look up the numbers for cost and gallons.

Solid Waste Status:  Set up an appointment with B.J. Litchford at BFI  (845-6800) for an interview and find invoices (check with Angela Hefner) (be sure to look up numbers before you go)

Purchasing Status: look up the meter records on copiers, look at the meters on the lab computers, look into how much our bills from Mr. Speedy are, follow up to see the copier numbers for 2003-2004, find where our wood comes from (if it is local, who is our supplier, etc.)

1.     How many reams or tons of high-grade writing paper and copy paper does RMWC purchase annually?

Purchasing of paper at RMWC is decentralized. The best way to estimate how much paper the college uses would be to look at the meters on the copiers and printers.  However, it is impossible to keep track of personal printers and outside printing jobs (excluding the use of Mr. Speedy).  In 2001-2002 there were 1,912,921 copies made on campus.  In 2002-2003 there were 1,655,957 copies made. *follow up to see what the 2003-2004 numbers are*

2.     What is the associated cost?

For each copy made the charge is roughly $0.0392 when the prices are good. So the estimated cost for copies made on campus in 2001-2002 is $74,986.50.  In 2002-2003 the estimated cost for copies made on campus is $64913.51.  *ask Angela about the cost of sir speedy*

3.     Does the campus, one or more departments, or student association have a policy of preferentially buying products-such as paper products, building materials, oil, and tires-made from recycled materials instead of virgin materials? (Yes No)

There is no policy currently in place for the purchase of recycled paper.

4.     Please specify the material and the quantity of the purchase. What is the cost difference between these products and their virgin equivalents?

*gather information about paper*

5.     Are any tropical hardwoods used in the construction of new buildings or other campus fixtures, such as landscape trellises? (Yes No)

There are only a few donated benches made of teak.  Otherwise there is no use of tropical wood.

6.  Does RMWC purchase any tropical hardwood furniture? If no, what kind of

wood is used and where does it come from?

No, the college usually uses oak, pine, birch, and poplar.

7.  What programs and policies have been established on campus to promote the use of ecologically sound products (such as organic produce, compact fluorescent light bulbs, non-toxic cleaning products, etc)?

OSHA has strict requirements, so there aren’t many extremely toxic chemicals on campus.  Most of our cleaners are citrus based and almost all of our paint is latex based.  Very few spots on campus require oil based paint.
