Banned In The USA:

A Study of American Freedom

Meet the students of the American Culture Program...

Olivia Badoi
Graduating Year: 2008
Major: American Studies
Hometown: Bucharest, Romania

I had a dream ever since I was a kid : to study in the US. So I became an American studies major and got a scholarship. That took a lot of work and determination but...here I am.

Marka Anderson
Graduating Year: 2008
Major: Sociology/Anthropology
Hometown: Houston, TX

I want to learn about American Culture because instead of perpetuating the hype that is the land of the free, why not challenge the idealized image of America and discover the truth? It is better to be conscious of what is real in order to see where there is a need for change, rather than allowing the myths to pacify us into acceptance.

Amanda England
Graduating Year: 2009
Hometown: Averill Park, NY
Major: Psychology

I want to study American Culture because for all that I've lived all my life here, I don't feel that I have a very good understanding of what American Culture really is. And really, that's a rather important thing to know.

Chantelle Greene
Graduating Year: 2007
Hometown: St. Croix, US Virgin Islands
Major: English Literature

“I would love to learn about the true meaning of American citizenship.  I am a U.S. citizen but even with four years of college at an American school, I don't feel like I know that much about the culture. During the program, I'll be searching for ideas and aspects of the culture that that I wasn't aware of before and that I can possibly relate to.”

Rachel Greenleaf
Graduating Year: 2009
Hometown: Cambridge, MD
Major: Philosophy

I want to understand [American Culture].  There are so many things that just conflict in our nation, and I would like to extrapolate into how these opposing movements can coexist and why.

Ashley Hale
Graduating Year: 2009
Hometown: Pearisburg, VA
Major: English/Education

American Culture is not one set of ideals and beliefs. There are many facets to American Culture. I believe that understanding these facets will help me in the classroom when it comes to understanding my students and creating lessons that take into account the diverse backgrounds of each of my students.

Jamie Hartless
Graduating Year: 2009
Major: Sociology/Anthropology
Hometown: Lynchburg, VA

I am very interested in advancing gay and civil rights in America. I feel that the best way for me to accomplish this is to try to understand the mindset of the American people and their opinions on freedom. You cannot hope to fight perceptions of the American people if you do not understand what they believe and why they believe it.

Sondra Morris
Graduating Year: 2009
Major: Communication Studies
Hometown: Newport News, VA

America is a country composed of a plethora of immigrants from every corner of the world through four generations.  I can't help but want to learn about how this "melting pot" created it's own recognizable culture.

Megan Pung
Graduating Year: 2007
Major: English (Creative Writing)
Hometown: San Francisco, CA

One reason I want to learn about American Culture is to bring authenticity to the characters I create.  I also feel that as American citizens we should all make an effort to be informed about the world and people around us.  One cannot discuss American Culture without dealing with the legal system and the political climate and these are or should be deeply important subjects to anyone of voting age.

Natasha
Velkovska
Graduating Year: 2008
Major: English Language and Literature
Hometown: Macedonia

Hanging out with internationals all the time didn't really make me feel like I was living in the US. So, I figured, why not get an insight and a deeper understanding, perhaps soften or even eradicate certain prejudice? Why stay one-sided when there is so much more to learn?

Heather Wilson
Graduating Year: 2008
Major: Sociology/Anthropology
Hometown: Tacoma, WA

I want to learn about American Culture because I think sometimes in our busy lives we forget that we have culture.  I think it is part of our duties as American citizens to learn about all the cultures we have right here in our very own country.

Jennifer Ward
Graduating Year: 2008
Major: History
Hometown: Kent Island, MD

I am interested in the freedoms American citizens have and how these have changed throughout the country's history. Also the social boundaries that have been constructed in the country and how these have changed, or not changed, throughout American History
